Position Overview & Specifications

Are you an experienced theatre technician with a bias in video and projection? Can you confidently operate media servers? Do you have knowledge and experience of the alignment and network control of projectors? Are you a theatre technician in a different discipline who would like to learn and develop new skills?

We are looking for a Video Technician to join our Production Video Unit to support with technical theatre operations. In this role you will report to the Head of Lighting and be responsible for servicing the video and audio-visual needs of the RSC, both on and off stage, working effectively with all related departments.

This position is offered as a 12-month fixed term opportunity that allows you to work in a producing house, contributing creatively to the artistic output of one of the world's best-known theatre companies. You will be joining to support our exciting season in 2023

Some of the main activities and responsibilities for this role include:

  • Overseeing and participating in the provision of the video-related technical support and some artistic content for shows performed at any of the RSC stages.
  • Participating in fit-ups, get-ins, rehearsals, performances, changeovers, ensuring they run smoothly.
  • Working collaboratively with the Lighting, Sounds, Automation and Stage Departments on all stage related projects, including captioned and audio described performances.
  • Participating and contributing effectively to all parts of assigned video projects and to facilitate the entire production process including camera operation, sound, lighting, editing and distribution of content.
  • Carrying out fault-finding, repair and maintenance of all relevant equipment as necessary.
  • Being aware of current Health and Safety legislation to ensure that all work is carried out in keeping with RSC policies and procedures.
  • Contributing artistically and technically on RSC projects.

Whilst the skills and experience below are considered fundamental to the role, we welcome applications from theatre technicians experienced in other technical disciplines and would consider candidates able to demonstrate a desire to learn and develop these necessary skills:

  • Rigging and operating projection equipment for live performances.
  • Working in repertory theatre and the quirks of working within a thrust stage
  • Using either Catalyst Video Servers, Qlab, Disguise or similar systems
  • A team player who can work creatively and within budget.
  • Fully conversant with editing equipment and using software for video applications, including Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Photoshop
  • Proficient in the use of both Mac and PC platforms.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract ideally starting in April 2023 until March 2024. The hours are up to 48 per week, worked any 6 days out of 7. The role is based in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.
