Position Overview & Specifications

National Clinical Advisor (x3) for Reducing Drug Deaths Open Innovation Challenge (remote)


0.5 session per week or equivalent hours (fixed or flexible as appropriate to service needs)

Available for 1 year in the first instance


The Reducing Drug Deaths Open Innovation National Catalyst Challenge is funded by the UK Government Office for Life Science (OLS) and the Scottish Government Scottish Health Industry Partnership (SHIP). The Open Innovation Challenge aims to support the development of disruptive innovative solutions that focus on detecting, responding and intervening to early acute risk of non-fatal and fatal drug overdose. The challenge ambition is to support pre-commercial experimental development, feasibility testing and evidence gathering which will support approval and commercial procurement of successful innovations across the UKs health systems.

This UK wide Open Innovation Challenge is managed on behalf of OLS and SHIP by NHS Fife, a member Board of Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES).


SBRI Innovation competition on drug overdose detection, response and intervention


These posts will provide clinical advice and support for projects successfully awarded contracts under the Reducing Drug Deaths Open Innovation National Catalyst Challenge. This includes, providing clinical insight and advice into projects, liaising with project teams and providing a clinical perspective to awarded projects throughout their life span, which may include academic and industry partners. Awarded projects will run through the Small Business Research Initiative process (SBRI). Projects will be a mix of phase 1 - feasibility study projects which have not yet reached prototype development – and phase 2 - projects with technology already at an advanced stage of development, and near ready to be deployed in a real-world environment.

Projects will run across all 4 U.K. nations, and the post holder will be expected to support projects across the U.K. therefore applicants from all U.K. nations are strongly encouraged.


We are seeking applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds with substantive experience of Substance Misuse / Alcohol and Drug / Addiction Services, including Allied Health Professionals, Pharmacists, Consultants, third sector and those from acute services, community care and primary care. Applications are encouraged from those from Alcohol and Drug Partnerships (or U.K. equivalent), charities and third sector, and private treatment organisations. Applicants can be based in any of the U.K. nations.


The post holders will be involved in working in collaboration with clinical teams, industry, academia, and NHS representatives from the U.K. devolved nations to support the innovative projects awarded as part of the Reducing Drug Deaths Open Innovation National Catalyst Challenge. The post holders will work closely with the Senior Project Manager and Clinical Lead for the Catalyst Challenge. The post holders will work closely with the other two other National Clinical Advisors from other regions of the U.K. devolved nations.

“How in the role of National Clinical Advisor do I intend to bring my special interest in this patient group and my leadership skills to enable the success of projects funded through the SBRI Overdose Detection, Response and Intervention.”

Please note that it is the responsibility of each applicant to obtain evidenced approval from their Line Manager, Finance Director (or equivalent) and Senior Responsible Officer, ahead of submitting an application, that they will be fully supported to undertake this additional activity and will accept payment for backfill of the role.
