Position Overview & Specifications

Job description

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to support the work of the Research Hub in the Environment Agency’s Chief Scientist’s Group. You will manage and develop our internal SharePoint Online (SPOL) site, helping our staff to store and share information and work collaboratively wherever possible. You will also support the delivery of our academic placement programmes and the communication and engagement activities of the Chief Scientist’s Group. Your work will help to raise the profile of science in the Environment Agency and grow the environmental scientists of the future. You will:

  • Manage and develop the Chief Scientist’s Group’s internal SharePoint site, creating a platform for collaboration across the Chief Scientist’s Group.
  • Support the delivery of our academic internship programme. We host undergraduate and graduate interns for up to 4 months each summer.
  • Provide science communication and engagement support to our Science Engagement Advisors and outreach support to our Research Partnerships team.

The team needs to balance the demands of reactive work with taking a proactive approach to longer term goals. This means team members work flexibly to learn from each other and make best use of our skills and availability.

The team

The Research Hub is part of the Chief Scientist’s Group, in the Environment and Business Directorate. We help the Chief Scientist's Group deliver the research/evidence the Environment Agency needs to fulfil its duties. We do this by:

  • Leading on academic outreach and engagement for the Environment Agency
  • Leading on business management activities for the Chief Scientist's Group
  • Publishing science and research
  • Increasing the impact of the Chief Scientist's Group work.

Experience/skills required

This is an exciting opportunity for somebody who:

  • has experience of managing and developing SharePoint Online sites.
  • has experience of stakeholder engagement and developing collaborative relationships with internal and external partners
  • enjoys working with young people and is motivated to help influence and develop the scientists of the future.
  • has good written communication skills and can produce concise, high quality, plain English briefings and engagement material
  • is well organised, and can prioritise and carry out a wide-ranging workload
  • has a methodical work approach and is adept at solving problems
  • has good attention to detail and can deliver high quality work on time
  • is a quick learner and can work with minimal supervision
  • is self-motivated and works well in a team environment and under their own initiative

An understanding of environmental science is desirable but not essential.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do at the Environment Agency. If you are new the Environment Agency, you will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be available to support you with your incident role.
